Decortication is the process that converts harvested straw bales of bast fiber into a useable, consistent stream of natural raw materials of varying specifications.
IND HEMP’s natural fiber decortication and processing facility in Fort Benton, Montana sits on a 10 acre campus occupying 52,000 square feet of processing equipment built around a Laroche bast fiber processing line capable of processing both hemp fiber and flax fiber crops at up to 4 tons an hour.
Decorticated technical fiber from IND HEMP is available in a variety of grades and specifications for a multitude of natural fiber applications.

Our highest quality, cleanest and finest Decorticated Technical Hemp Fiber produced in the USA, Platinum Fiber is also validated to meet compatibility requirements for European automotive applications. This fiber can used in a variety of nonwoven applications as-is—plus is the top choice of hemp fiber for upgrading, refining and cottonizing for more technical nonwovens, like carding for needlepunch or spunlace systems, as well as spinning into yarns to make textiles.

– Hemp is a rapidly renewable, sustainable agricultural product that sequesters CO2 from the atmosphere, is good for our soils and provides multiple raw material streams useable for a wide range of product applications and industries. Hemp truly is the greener alternative to petroleum and forest-based products.
-To achieve a Platinum Fiber our agronomy team supports our farm partners with consistent attention, from pre-plant soil samples and field selection, through seeding and production our team guides the grower to success. Our custom harvest team determines appropriate harvest timing and uses specialized equipment cut the crop into sections to promote optimal retting conditions and processing consistency. Retting is a natural biological process where microbes in the soil breakdown the bond between the bast fiber and core by feeding on the lignin and pectin glues that naturally bind them. The amount of retting is crucial to good separation of fibers and a finished product that can meet the specifications for the top tier of hemp natural fiber.
The IH Gold Decorticated Technical Hemp Fiber, has a wide range of uses as is, with less than 6% hurd and a staple length of 2.5″-4.5″. This includes airlaid nonwovens, such as insulation and geotextiles. IH Gold fiber has also been upgraded and cottonized and used in fabric and textiles with our trademarked ‘Made with Montana Gold’ label.

– Hemp hurd represents roughly 70% of the mass within the hemp plant and sequesters 45% carbon by weight. When used in applications such as mix additive for plugging oil wells, or to build a house, that carbon is durably sequestered for a lifetime, while offsetting additional use of energy intensive-carbon emitting materials such as port land cement, fiberglass insulation and vinyl siding. Every for every ounce of hemp used in a plastic- that is an ounce of petroleum material not used.
Bronze fiber is often unretted or less retted than the higher grades and presents a longer fiber with more hurd or shiv still bound to the material. This fiber works well for erosion control and geotextile applications and can also work for pulping.

You can make a lot of things out of iron, and IH Iron fiber is no different. This material is a short- 1-3mm fiber length with 20-55% hurd content. This material works in wetlaid nonwovens systems, pulping and papermaking and has also been successfully trialed in molded fiber packaging applications
