PREMIUM UPGRADED HEMP FIBER

Sustainable solutions
for industry

Made in the U.S.A., IH Premium upgraded fiber is decorticated technical hemp fiber that has been further processed and upgraded for additional uses. This includes Mechanical Refining – the use of mechanical means to further open and clean hemp fibers – that covers: Opening, Cleaning, Combing and Carding. This produces high-quality hemp fibers used in a variety of applications, including nonwovens, textiles, and composite materials. Fiber can be further refined in a wet process – such as scouring – that removes fatty waxes, pectins, and other impurities. This prepares the hemp fibers for use in textiles and spunlace nonwovens. Scouring improves fiber cleanliness, fineness and quality, enhances absorption of dyes/finishes, and ensures a high performance standard.

Fiber that has been both mechanically upgraded and scoured is often referred to as ‘cottonized hemp fiber’, or more simply, hemp fiber that has been processed to a point where it is similar enough in feel, fineness and length to be able to be used in systems designed for manufacturing with hemp natural fibers.

– Hemp is a rapidly renewable, sustainable agricultural product that sequesters CO2 from the atmosphere, is good for our soils and provides multiple raw material streams useable for a wide range of product applications and industries. Hemp truly is the greener alternative to petroleum and forest-based products.

IH Fiber Premium - Cottonized

IH Fiber Premium Cottonized is the highest grade of industrial hemp fiber currently available. It’s suitable for spinning into yarns for textile applications, or for finer nonwovens – such as spunlace – in finer webs for wipes, feminine care and hygenics applications.

Premium Cottonized has been used to make fabric used in the Smith and Rogue 100% USA Made Benton Shirt, as well as successfully carded and hydroentangled in collaboration with the Nonwovens Institute at NC State to produce wipes in multiple blends and densities with cotton and lyocell.

– Hemp hurd represents roughly 70% of the mass within the hemp plant and sequesters 45% carbon by weight. When used in applications such as mix additive for plugging oil wells, or to build a house, that carbon is durably sequestered for a lifetime, while offsetting additional use of energy intensive-carbon emitting materials such as port land cement, fiberglass insulation and vinyl siding. Every for every ounce of hemp used in a plastic- that is an ounce of petroleum material not used.
